Info:
Joey Coco makes a confident first impression on Phil Weeks’ Robsoul Recordings with ‘Apply Yourself’, a debut EP rooted in self-belief, resilience and soulful movement. True to its title, the record is about showing up fully… being enough, using what you’ve got, and making the best of any situation life throws your way.
Produced through periods of doubt and creative drought, ‘Apply Yourself’ channels perseverance into warm, bumping house. Drawing from soul and 90s gospel influences, Joey Coco set out to create something “emotive yet bumpin’,” tying the EP together with a lyrical throughline that celebrates sufficiency and self-worth. The result is a cohesive, heartfelt collection that feels personal and dancefloor-ready.
The title track sets the tone with crisp toms, jazzy keys and a shuffling groove that invites you to lean in and commit. ‘Props’ follows with a playful lift, pairing Emerson Alexander’s gorgeous vocal with a chocolate-warm bassline and skippy beats.
‘As Far As The East Is From The West’ delivers a jackin’, jazzy tool, bouncing with percussion as echoed Jamaican patois vocals stretch the groove. Closing track ‘Sufficient’ seals the message, drifting into cosmic R&B territory with a sweet, affirming vocal from ML HALL… a reminder that sometimes, what you have truly is enough.
