It’s been a while since the Robsoul bossman graced his own label with a full solo EP – almost two years to be more precise – but Phil Weeks makes up for it with four outstanding raw, four-to-the-floor grooves.
‘On Impact’ by name, full impact by nature… The title track sets the scene as the Robsoul roustabout gets his funk on with the most energetic jam of the EP. Bumping, filtered and laced with a super smooth vocal sample, this hits with intention.
Deeper into the EP we slide and glide as Phil covers all the bases; ‘Quick Beat’ switches and shuffles with a little Chicago charm and a lot of jazz magic while ‘God Mode’ takes us to chunkier pastures. Fat kicks, sleazy guitar textures and a heavenly sense of weight. Finally we hit ‘Honey B’. Low-fi, dusty, heads-down and hypnotic, it’s every bit as sweet as it sounds. Don’t leave it so long next time please Mr Weeks.
